The Holy Grail of dermatology (and it's not sunscreen)

If you're into all things skincare, you're probably familiar with retinols and retinoids. These vitamin A derivatives are often considered skincare superstars, known for their remarkable effects on skin health and appearance! They're highly sought-after in the dermatology and skin care world because of their various benefits, which range from fighting acne to reducing wrinkles and just making your skin look better overall.

What exactly are Retinols and Retinoids?

Retinoids are a class of compounds derived from vitamin A. This class includes retinol, retinaldehyde, and prescription-strength options like tretinoin, adapalene, and tazarotene. Retinol, a common over-the-counter form, requires enzymatic conversion within the skin to become retinoic acid, the active form capable of directly interacting with skin cells.

How Retinoids work on your skin

Retinoids exert their effects primarily through binding themselves to specific proteins inside skin cells, called retinoic acid receptors (RARs). Once attached, they influence the instructions in a cell's DNA, leading to changes in how the cell functions. One important way retinoids benefit the skin is by speeding up cell turnover. This means that dead skin cells are shed more quickly, while the production of new, healthy cells is also increased. This process helps unclog pores, reduce acne lesions, and promote smoother skin texture.

Retinoids offer more than just smoother skin and acne reduction. They also stimulate collagen production,  a vital protein responsible for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity. By boosting collagen synthesis and protecting it from breakdown, retinoids help minimize fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. Moreover, they play a role in regulating melanin production, which can help even out skin tone and treat hyperpigmentation conditions like melasma and age spots.

Clinical Efficacy and Considerations

Research has repeatedly shown the efficacy of retinoids in treating a range of dermatological issues. However, due to their potent nature and potential side effects, they require careful consideration and responsible usage. Over-the-counter retinol products are gentler and good for most skin types, but prescription retinoids might cause irritation, dry skin, and increased sensitivity, especially at first. Introducing them slowly and following a proper skincare routine can help with this, while still getting the most out of their benefits.

Here are my top tips for someone using retinoids for the first time:

1) Start slowly: Start with a lower concentration or frequency, such as every other night or every two nights, to allow your skin to get used to the retinoid.

2) Use a pea-sized amount: A small amount is all that's needed to cover your entire face. Using too much can increase the risk of irritation.

3) Apply to dry skin: Wait at least 20 minutes after washing your face before applying retinoids to make sure your skin is completely dry.

4) Use moisturizer: Applying a moisturizer immediately after the retinoid can help reduce dryness and irritation.

5) Protect your skin: Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher during the day, as retinoids can increase skin sensitivity to the sun.

Retinol and retinoids have become popular additions to many skincare routines for good reason. These powerful ingredients offer a variety of benefits for your skin. However, it's important to remember that these products require patience, as results may take time to become noticeable. They can also cause some dryness or irritation initially, so consulting a dermatologist before incorporating them into your routine is always recommended.
