Skincare Actives You Need...And What You Should Ditch!
Nov 18, 2024As a dermatologist who’s seen it all, I’ve met patients from both ends of the skincare spectrum—from the minimalists to those with enough products to stock a small pharmacy! The beauty industry, worth a staggering $500+ billion, thrives on keeping us hooked with 'better' products, 'miracle' ingredients, and procedures that promise to transform everything. But here’s the truth: your skin’s needs aren’t nearly as complicated as they’re made out to be!
The Non-Negotiables
First things first: let’s talk about the absolute essentials. You might be surprised that my top picks aren’t glamorous or groundbreaking; they’re practical and scientifically backed.
1) Sunscreen, SPF 30+: If there’s one thing you do for your skin, make it this. Sunscreen isn’t just for sunny days at the beach—it’s for every single day, no matter the weather. Why? Because UV rays cause premature aging and increase the risk of skin cancer, even when you’re indoors. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 and apply to any skin that's exposed. Trust me, your future self will thank you!
2) Retinoids: Once you hit your thirties, it’s time to add a retinoid like retinol or tretinoin to your routine. Retinoids are great for improving skin texture, evening out tone, and reducing fine lines. They work by speeding up cell turnover and boosting collagen, which helps keep your skin firm. Yes, they can be a bit irritating at first, so start slow—just once or twice a week and give your skin time to adjust. Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint.
The 'nice to haves'
1) Vitamin C: This antioxidant powerhouse can increase your sunscreen’s effectiveness when used in the morning. It’s great for brightening and reducing free radicals, but it can be finicky and unstable. If you’re committed to using Vitamin C, make sure it’s in a stable formulation and store it in a cool, dark place to maintain its potency.
2) Azelaic acid: Azelaic acid doesn’t get the hype it deserves, but in the world of dermatology, it’s a hidden gem. Made from grains like barley and rye, it’s a gentle multitasker that works for almost everyone. It helps fade dark spots, calms redness, fights acne, and is even safe for sensitive skin. If you haven’t tried it yet, now’s the time!
The “Maybe” Actives
Now, what about the trending “miracle” ingredients? Some are genuinely beneficial, while others are more fluff than function.
1) Bakuchiol: This plant-based ingredient is often called a “natural” alternative to retinoids. It can give your skin a mild exfoliation, but it doesn’t have the strong science behind it like retinoids do. If you're pregnant or retinoids aren’t your skin’s best friend, Bakuchiol could be a gentle option to try. But for most people, retinoids are still the way to go.
2) Single-Active Products (like Niacinamide and Hyaluronic Acid): These ingredients are popular because they do work. Niacinamide helps calm the skin and brighten it, while hyaluronic acid hydrates and plumps. The catch? They’re most effective when used with other ingredients. On their own, they won’t work miracles, but they’re great additions to your routine when combined with the right products.
There’s a lot of hype around these products, but do you really need them separately? Probably not! Many of these ingredients are already in your skincare, and adding more doesn’t always improve results. In fact, it can cause irritation. Before buying something new, check if you’re already using it!
3) Estrogen Cream
This staple as a vaginal cream for many menopausal and post menopausal women is getting its time to shine as a skincare ingredient to help with dryness that happens in midlife. That's because our skin has estrogen receptors and when our internal estrogen levels drop, our skin shows it! While it’s still new in skincare, estrogen cream can help keep moisture in and improve the look of fine lines. If you’re dealing with dryness or signs of aging, this might be worth trying so talk to your doctor.
Keep It Simple, Stay Consistent
It’s easy to get caught up in the pressure to follow complicated routines or buy every product that promises glowing, youthful skin. I call it the “Hot Girl Hamster Wheel” where we keep adding more steps, more products, more money, and, well, more stress.
But here’s the truth: less is often more. Here’s the simple routine that really works:
Cleanser: Pick one that’s right for your skin type. This does not have to be expensive!
Targeted Treatments: A retinoid or Vitamin C, depending on your skin goals.
Moisturizer: Use a lightweight one during the day and a richer one at night.
Sunscreen: SPF 30+ every single morning.
If you’re using more than four to five products daily, it might be time to evaluate if they’re all pulling their weight. Remember: simplicity is not only effective but kinder to your skin barrier. When you know what skin care essentials to stick with, your skin will glow.
