Nailed It?! Derm Approved Healthy Nail Habits

Dec 30, 2024

Nails aren’t just there to show off your favorite polish or nail art—they’re a direct reflection of your overall health (yep, just like your skin). With the rise of gel nails, dip powders, and intricate manicures, it’s more important than ever to find a balance between nails that look great and are healthy, too. While these trends can take your style to the next level, they also come with potential risks like allergic reactions, infections, and long-term nail damage. So, let’s break it down: how can you enjoy beautiful nails while keeping them strong and healthy? Here’s what dermatologists want you to know!

The Hidden Risks of Nail Treatments

Itchy Eyes? Check Your Nails!

Did you know that nail products could be behind your itchy eyelids? Surprisingly, chemicals from nail lacquers, acrylics, and gel nails are common culprits of eyelid dermatitis. These allergens don’t just irritate the nails, they can also affect areas with delicate skin, like the eyelids and neck. But why would something meant for your nails show up on your face? Here’s the deal: the skin around your nails is much thicker and more resilient, while the skin on your eyelids is thin and super sensitive, making it more prone to irritation.Over time, substances like methacrylates and cyanoacrylates, found in many modern nail products, can sensitize your immune system. Even if you’ve used these products for years without issues, a sudden rash or irritation might still develop. Improper application or breaks in the skin barrier increase the risk, making gentle nail care more important than ever.

An allergy to nail polish may not sound like a big deal but it can actually have far-reaching consequences! Did you know that some of the chemicals in nail adhesives are also used in medical devices like glucose monitors and even implants? If you develop an allergy now, it could make future medical treatments way more complicated. Something to think about next time you’re picking out that perfect shade!

Nail Infections

Many nail salons have bumped up their sanitation strategies in the past few decades, and for good reason! The tubs used for pedicure soaks have been known to harbor bacteria and cause infections in people's skin. Fortunately, using plastic tub liners can cut down on this risk as well as using sanitized instruments on each guest. When selecting a nail salon, look for places that clean their instruments and individually wrap them.

Fungal infections are a common concern in nail salons. Even if the equipment is sterilized, shared items like nail polish—especially topcoats—can carry and spread fungi. A simple solution? Bring your own polish! It's an easy way to lower that risk.

Nail Lesions

Believe it or not, you can get moles, sun spots and even melanoma under your nails! One of the areas on the body your dermatologist wants to look at are your nails! But if you just got a mani/pedi, this can be difficult, Always take a quick look at your nails before getting polish applied. If you see any discoloration or streaks, be sure to show your dermatologist. It's important that you come polish free to any appointment concerning your nails so that your dermatologist can give you the best assessment!

UV Lights and Nail Damage

While gel nails are long-lasting and beautiful, the UV light used to cure them has raised concerns. Over time, repeated exposure could increase the chances of skin cancer or cause premature aging on your hands. Consider wearing UV-protective gloves with the fingertips removed or applying sunscreen before your manicure to reduce the risks while still enjoying your gorgeous nails! Better yet, ask your nail salon to use an LED light instead!

Safer Nail Practices

Here’s how you can enjoy manicures and pedicures while minimizing risks:

  1. Choose Salons Wisely: Look for salons that sterilize their equipment and cover pedicure tubs with plastic liners. Consider bringing your own nail polish, especially topcoats, which can harbor fungi.
  2. Limit Exposure: Save acrylic or gel manicures for special events, rather than making them a regular routine. Constant use can increase sensitivity to the chemicals used.
  3. Be Gentle: Say no to harsh practices like cutting cuticles, excessive filing of nail plates, or improper nail removal. These can lead to long-term damage, infections, and weakened nails!
  4. Breaks are Essential: Give your natural nails time to recover by skipping manicures or pedicures now and then. Regular breaks help maintain the strength and health of your nails.

Nails are not just a canvas for creativity—they’re also a reflection of your health. Whether you love a fresh manicure or keep it natural, understanding the risks and benefits of nail treatments is key. With safe nail care practices, you can enjoy beautiful nails without compromising your overall health.

And don’t forget, if you notice any changes in your nails or develop unexpected rashes, it’s always a good idea to check in with your dermatologist. Healthy nails begin with smart choices and mindful habits!
