My Top Skin Care Myths...Busted! PART 2

skin minimalism skincare myths skincare tips Apr 15, 2024

Have you ever found yourself endlessly scrolling through beauty blogs, skincare forums, or social media platforms, wanting to find the best skincare routine? In today's digital age, where information is just a click away, it's all too easy to get swept up in the whirlwind of tips, tricks, and trends. But here's the catch – not all skincare advice is created equal.

A few weeks back, I took a deep dive into some common skincare myths that many of us have fallen for. But guess what? There's still plenty more to explore! So, this week, I'm back on the blog with more skincare myths to debunk and truths to uncover.

Let's dive in and find out what's real and what's not!

Myth #6: Getting older is the worst and nothing good comes from it.

I wholeheartedly disagree with this! Aging and gaining maturity are true gifts. Reflecting on my teenage years and 20s, I remember feeling insecure and uncertain about my future. I lacked the self-confidence to pursue my passions and values, often prioritizing fitting in with my peer group over authenticity. Fast forward to my mid-40s, and I am loving each decade more than the last. With age comes maturity and self-confidence that only comes from a life lived with fulfilling experiences. Yes, things change with age and over time, but change is inevitable. How are you going to face the challenges and changes of this season of life and the next? Will you shrink from it and fade into the background? Or will you tackle it head-on, full of confidence and wisdom? Let’s embrace whatever stage of life we’re in and look forward to the next challenge and adventure! This is our one life to live, after all.

Myth #7: Getting aesthetic treatments will make you look fake and unnatural.

The best aesthetic treatments enhance your natural features; they don't change you completely. I love it when my patients say even their moms can't tell they've had something done. When cosmetic treatments are performed by skilled professionals with advanced aesthetic and anatomic training, the results don’t make you look different, just a more refined, enhanced version of yourself!

Myth #8: If something is 'non-invasive,' it's safe.

This is a common misconception I come across. People often perceive surgery as risky and potentially dangerous but won’t think twice about getting fillers injected into their face or having a laser procedure done. Although many aesthetic treatments can be done safely, there are ALWAYS risks! These risks can vary from bruising to even burns and scars! While serious complications aren’t common, they do happen, leading to #9!

Myth #9: Having a 'certification' makes you a skilled cosmetic provider.

There are many people out there performing aesthetic treatments with very minimal training! In some states, you don’t even have to be a healthcare professional at all! Taking a weekend course for cosmetic training is simply not enough and unsafe. Unfortunately, serious complications, including death, can occur when improperly trained personnel perform these procedures. One of the most important reasons to see someone trained in plastic surgery or dermatology is that when complications occur (and this can happen with even the best), these medical professionals know how to manage them. So before looking for the best ‘deal’ with your aesthetic treatments, make sure you know who is performing them and their level of training and expertise.

Myth #10: You can get healthy skin by using products alone.

Healthy skin starts from within! We are learning more about regenerative and preventative medicine every day. While some skin issues need medical assistance and are not preventable, a lot can be avoided by maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet of lean protein, antioxidant-rich foods, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Staying active both physically and mentally will increase longevity and keep your skin looking and feeling amazing. The 'Blue Zone' areas of the world teach us that living well is more about lifestyle and purpose more than anything else. And when we take care of our bodies, our skin will glow from within.
