How to Un-do Summer Damage!
Oct 09, 2023The weather is getting cooler, the days are growing shorter, and pumpkin spice lattes are everywhere you look! It can only mean one thing—fall has arrived!
This is one of my favorite seasons for several reasons. Fall typically marks the return to school and routines, and our lives become busier as the holidays approach. It's also an ideal time to reset our routines and address any sun damage from the summer since the days are shorter, and the UV index is lower.
During the summer, it's common for us to break away from our routines and healthy habits in pursuit of fun, sunshine, and relaxation. But that can wreak havoc on our skin that needs to be undone! Fall is the perfect season for this.
If you've noticed that your skin has become more discolored on your face, chest, and hands after spending time in the sun during the summer, it's a clear sign of sun damage. Don't worry, though; there are effective ways to address this issue and restore your skin's health! One option for repairing sun damage is through procedures like chemical peels or laser resurfacing. These treatments can help to reduce discoloration and improve the overall appearance of your skin. Before undergoing these procedures, it's important to take proper sun protection measures. Avoid seeking treatment if your skin is still tan.
It's often helpful to prep the skin before these treatments with either anti-oxidants, retinols/retinoids, AHA/BHAs, or even skin lightening treatments like hydroquinone, kojic acid, mandelic acid or others. Sometimes the brown discoloration on the skin is something called melasma, and that requires a slightly different approach as too aggressive treatments can actually worsen melasma.
As we transition into the fall season, it's essential to adjust your skincare routine to accommodate the changing weather conditions. The cooler and drier climate calls for some modifications in your skincare regimen.
Here are some tips to update your skincare regimen:
1) Swap out your lighter lotion for a thicker cream-based moisturizer. This will provide your skin with the added hydration and protection it needs during the colder months.
2) If you have dry or sensitive skin, opt for a creamier face wash. This gentler formulation will help maintain your skin's moisture balance.
3) Even though the UV index is lower in the fall, that doesn't mean you can forgo your sunscreen! Remember, this is the basis of any good skin care regimen. So be sure to apply daily 365 days of the year!
4) If you use retinol or retinoid products, you may find them a bit harsh during the fall. Try alternating days for application and use the "sandwich technique." Start with a layer of moisturizer, apply the retinol/retinoid, and finish with another layer of moisturizer. This will reduce any potential irritation.
Pro tip: I've been enjoying using a hyaluronic acid serum as well for my base then the retinoid then a thick moisturizer to help lock in hydration!
Fall is also a great time of year to get in to see your dermatologist for a general skin check to evaluate for any skin cancers and to help establish a healthy skin care regimen! Your dermatologist can also advise you on the best in-office treatments for any skin issues that are bothering you.
