Dermatology Secrets for Healthy, Glowing Skin around Menopause
Mar 27, 2023Ok ladies, let's talk about menopause... This period (pun intended) of a woman's life has long been feared, taboo to talk about, and frankly ignored. But fortunately, times are changing and we are now recognizing this as an important, and beautiful stage in a woman's life.
Let's start with the basics.
1. What is menopause?
Menopause is the 12 month period in a woman's life after her period has stopped. Peri-menopause is directly before this and during this time, a woman may have sporadic periods and symptoms of menopause. Post-menopause is after the 12 month mark of menopause and will last the rest of a woman's life.
2. What are some of the skin changes that occur during peri/menopause?
As estrogen levels drop, our skin will become dryer and we lose collagen with age. Did you know that the skin can lose up to 30% of its collagen in the first five years after menopause? This results in more wrinkling of the skin and sagging.
As estrogen levels go down, relative testosterone levels are up and this can induce acne in some patients. With age and chronic sun exposure, skin pigmentary changes can also occur with sun spots and sun damage becoming more prominent. And of course, this can also mean skin cancers can develop during this phase of life.
Here are some simple steps you can take to maintain healthy skin during peri/menopause:
1) Moisturize regularly
Stick to a fragrance-free moisturizer with hyaluronic acid and ceramides which help to hydrate the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
2) Eat healthy foods
We all know that a healthy diet is essential for maintaining healthy skin. Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation and probiotics can help promote healthy gut bacteria, which supports healthy skin. Increasing protein is essential as well since muscle mass decreases with age. It's recommended that woman over 50 eat 20-25g of high quality protein with each meal!
3) Use products that contain a retinoid
A powerful anti-aging ingredient that helps to increase collagen production and improve skin texture? What’s not to love? You will see results with acne quicker than collagen production, but stick with it, your skin will thank you and be glowing and beautiful with consistent use.
4) Get enough sleep
Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night to help your body repair and regenerate your skin cells. Pro tip: Try to sleep on your back as much as possible or on side if you are a side sleeper to reduce sleep lines (unfortunately, I'm a stomach sleeper).
5) Exercise regularly
Three words: movement is key! Regular exercise not only helps in increasing blood flow and circulation but also helps relieve stress which in turn improves overall skin health and appearance. Weight bearing exercises and weight lifting will help increase muscle mass and bone density as well so grab those weights and hit the gym!
