Healthy skin reset with microneedling!

collagen hyperpigmentation micronnedling skin rejuvenation Nov 13, 2023

Microneedling has become incredibly popular lately, but what exactly is it, and does it deliver on its promises?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny needles to stimulate the body's natural collagen production and rejuvenates the skin. By creating these tiny micro traumas in the skin, it actually increases growth factors and helps the skin heal and remodel, leaving behind beautiful and refreshed skin! Does it sound too good to be true?  Let's find out!

What does microneedling treat?

Microneedling is great for improving skin texture, reducing hyperpigmentation, boosting collagen, treating scars, and minimizing fine lines and wrinkles.

1) Rejuvenates and Tightens Skin

As we get older, our skin loses its bounce and collagen, leading to wrinkles. Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, tackles these aging signs by creating tiny injuries in the skin. This triggers the body's healing process, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin. The result is firmer, tighter skin with fewer fine lines and wrinkles!

2) Minimizes Scarring and Acne Marks

Acne can leave behind unsightly scars and blemishes, which can be a source of frustration for many. Microneedling comes to the rescue by reducing the appearance of these marks. It works by breaking down scar tissue and encouraging the growth of fresh, healthy skin. Through a series of sessions, you'll likely see significant improvement in the texture and tone of your skin.

3) Evens Out Skin Tone

Hyperpigmentation, sunspots, and melasma are common skin concerns that can lead to uneven skin tone. Microneedling can be a game-changer for people dealing with these issues. The treatment helps break down excess pigmentation and stimulates the skin to produce more even-toned, radiant skin.

4) Reduces the Size of Pores

Many people find large pores to be a cosmetic issue. Although achieving completely poreless skin, as showcased in the 'glass skin' trend on social media, is unrealistic and impossible, enhancing skin texture can make pores appear smaller and create a more even look. Microneedling can help minimize the appearance of pores by promoting collagen growth, which tightens and refines the skin's texture. Smaller pores contribute to a smoother, more youthful appearance.

5) Is a team player!

After microneedling, the skin has open channels that become more receptive to topical products. Your dermatologist may combine your microneedling treatment with other products like a chemical peel, steroids, minoxidil or platelet rich plasma (PRP) depending on what is being treated. The micro channels created through microneedling help the products penetrate more deeply into the skin giving you more impactful results. This enhances the overall benefits of your skincare routine, helping you achieve better results. Be careful to only apply products onto the skin after microneedling that your dermatologist has approved of first as using certain actives has been shown to cause skin irritation and even granulomas (bumps) deep under the skin.

6) Non-Surgical and Minimal Downtime

Unlike some procedures that involve downtime, microneedling is an excellent choice for those seeking a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment with minimal downtime. It's especially convenient for individuals with busy schedules—let's be honest, who doesn't fall into that category! Typically, people can get back to their daily activities shortly after the procedure, experiencing only mild redness, pinpoint bleeding, and mild swelling.

One of the things I love about microneedling is its versatility—it's customizable for my patients and safe for various skin areas and types! The procedure doesn't produce heat, making it suitable for melanin-rich skin tones. Microneedling is particularly effective for those with early or moderate aging concerns, offering a proactive and prejuvenative approach. While it's not a quick fix and usually requires a series of sessions, the results are well worth it!

It's important to understand that any procedure, regardless of its nature, comes with potential risks and the chance of complications. Given that this device actually punctures the skin, numbing medicine is needed and there is a risk of infection. So, it's strongly recommended not to try it at home! Using tools like dermarollers or skin stamping more than once can also be risky, as it may cause infections or leave scars on your skin. Here's the bottom line – if you're after that skin glow-up, stick to in-office microneedling!
