Sunscreen's BFF- the powerful fern extract you didn't know you needed!

As a dermatologist, I am always reminding people about the importance of sun protection. And for most people, that means slathering on the sunscreen. But did you know sun protection is so much more than just sunscreen? It's true! Sunscreen is just one component in keeping your skin healthy, vibrant and free of skin cancers. Seeking shade, wearing wide-brimmed hats, avoiding those peak UV hours, and wearing sun-protective clothing are all great ways to safeguard our skin.

But here's something you might not know—there’s a powerful fern extract that can help protect your skin when you’re exposed to the sun. Let me introduce you to sunscreen's powerful sidekick, polypodium leucotomos.

What is Polypodium leucotomos?

Polypodium leucotomos is a tropical fern native to Central and South America, commonly used in skincare and health supplements due to its antioxidant and photoprotective properties. The extract from this fern has been shown to help protect the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, reduce oxidative stress, and improve skin health overall. People in Latin America have been using it for centuries by drinking it as a tea to prevent sun damage. Now, you can take it in pill or gummy form to keep your skin safe when you're outside. Let me tell you more about this incredible fern!

Benefits and Uses:

Photoprotection:

1) UV Protection: Polypodium leucotomos extract (PLE) helps shield the skin from damage caused by UV radiation. This means it can reduce the risk of getting sunburned and prevent long-term damage to your skin from the sun.

2) Sun Sensitivity Conditions: PLE is especially helpful for people with conditions like polymorphous light eruption (PMLE), rosacea, and other issues that make them sensitive to sunlight. It's also been shown to help people with melasma, which is a tough skin condition to treat.

Antioxidant Properties:

1) Neutralizes Free Radicals: The extract has strong antioxidant properties, which means it can neutralize free radicals. Free radicals are harmful molecules that can damage your skin cells, and PLE helps to reduce this damage by lowering oxidative stress.

2) Anti-Inflammatory Effects: PLE also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce skin inflammation and redness, making your skin look and feel better.

Skin Health:

1) Anti-Aging: By protecting your skin from UV-induced damage, PLE helps prevent signs of premature aging like wrinkles and fine lines. It keeps your skin looking youthful for longer.

2) Skin Tone: PLE can improve your overall skin tone and texture. It helps reduce dark spots and promotes an even complexion, making your skin look smoother and healthier.

Ways to Use Polypodium leucotomos:

Oral Supplements

If you’re looking to get the most out of PLE, the easiest way is through oral supplements. These usually come in the form of pills, capsules, or gummies making them super simple to take every day. It’s especially a good idea to use them during times when you’re going to be spending a lot of time in the sun, like on a summer beach trip or a sunny vacation. Just take them as directed, and they’ll help protect your skin from UV rays and keep it healthy!
